2012 Funded Project: “Getting Real in the Classroom: The New York Times Upfront”

Granted: Funding to purchase 50 subscriptions of The New York Times Upfront which provides age appropriate informational text and lesson plans.

Summary Description: Access to the The New York Times Upfront will enable Melican Middle School seventh graders to enhance their non-fiction reading comprehension skills while helping them to understand current events via world-class, age appropriate reporting. The New York Times Upfront is filled with the types of literary non-fiction emphasized by the common core curriculum, and the articles, graphs, essays and corresponding lesson plans will help teachers to stimulate students’ interest in the world around them.
